And yes, apart form them looking a little wonky when first released (the "wood" being particularly awful), Skoda's initial pricing strategy did them no favours in the marketplace. Considered a Calais wagon but the refinement, tech and fuel-consumption steered us to the Superb. After 18 months we are still very happy with it but wow the 2016 model looks nice.
That's odd as I test-drove one with a reversing camera. I'd say it's as simple as the car is dog ugly, rather than badge snobs. I honestly don't think the car is that bad looking.
I think some people are scared because of 'VAG' reliability problems but if you pick the 6speed DSG you won't have a problem.
